Black and White

Black and white spread in the little watercolor paper art journal.
Right-hand page shown above, which includes an additional 'flap'
on the right-hand side

Left-hand side of spread shown above. All images and writing sketched in pencil, then inked with Sharpie or other marker...a limited attempt to explore the 'idea of beauty' in different cultures. I am sure whole books have been written about the subject! I want to believe that our 'inner beauty' is more important, but ... it sure seems as though the world worships at the altar of youth and physical attractiveness...

  1. Sorry I'm so late getting here to see this beauty. I was especially intrigued by the side with the woman whose face was partially covered. Not only do we worship at the feet of youth, beauty, and skinny, some cultures also force women to hide their faces as if in shame. You have made a powerful statement here, whether you intended to or not.

Of course, I suspect the real lesson here is inner beauty is never black and white, nor is it shades of gray. You make faces like they were second nature to you. Have a happy and safe 4th.

  2. These pages are really cool. I am loving black and white lately. Beauty is so fluid. I think we are more drawn to what's familiar rather than symmetrical. And what we keep seeing is more familiar and what we're drawn to! I think seeing new things until we feel comfortable with them allows us to find beauty in all things.

  3. I've enjoyed viewing your artful blog. Really like your newest work, exploring themes of beauty. Very thought provoking. I've been working through that Mixed Mania book too, and made some scrumptious squares. Are you in the MMArtfriends yahoo group? Thanks for visiting my blog.
