Coming Into Focus

Week 12 of the Documented Life Project-
the Journal.  Focal Point was the
challenge for the week. The dictionary defines
the Focal Point as the center of attention.
I tried to create the most detail in the
lily bloom, and high contrast between
the background and the lily, in order to
lead your eye to focus on it.

Theoretically, the other shapes
and spaces in the picture plane should
lead your eye around and back to the
focal point.  That's the definition I
remember from art class. But most
of the time I am not thinking about
those technical details when I make
a drawing. I just realize when the
drawing 'needs something.'
I also 'filtered out' extra details, as
there were other stems in this
potted lily, but I chose to draw
just one plant.

The facing page, above.  You can always
use your own hand for a model! I have
rather small hands and short fingers,
but this does seem a bit distorted.

Linking up with Elizabeth for
T Tuesday, and sharing my favorite
coffee cup.  I really need to do some
more cup drawings, and have been
thinking of comparing shapes of
coffee cup handles. I wonder how
long it will take for me to get
'round to it?!

International Fake Journal Month
began on April 1, and I would love to
have you visit my fake journal blog:
I pretend to be someone else, who
makes an art journal that is different
from the art I would normally create.
Stop by and see if you can guess
what my character is like, and
what he/she does for a living.

and not with his hands."

  3. I didn't get my usual Easter Lily this year - just procrastination. I was delighted to see yours and I do think the focus in on the blossom

  4. I wish I had you around when I was trying to describe all these AB lessons on such as focal point. Your lily is gorgeous. I agree with Darla that the focus is on the blossom. Loved the hand, too, since, as you know, I have a thing for hands.

Sorry I'm late visiting today. I had problems with my internet this morning that was finally resolved with help from my service provider.

Thanks for sharing this beautiful art and your panda mug with us for T this Tuesday.
