Turkey Tuesday

It is again time to prepare for a
new year of journaling.
My 2024 Hobonichi has arrived!

It is always a surprise how
small my A6 Hobonichi English Planner
starts out in the new year...
no wrinkled pages from
watercolor and pen, no
added thickness from tipped-in
pages or collages. You'd think
I would be used to it by now,
after eight years using this Planner!

Pictured above, just a month and
a half left to go in the 2023 journal.
The 2024 journal, beneath it, has
"new" Tomoe River paper in it.
From what I can piece together from
on-line articles, a new company has
taken over the TR paper, using
new machinery, and a slightly different
method/recipe. Apparently the old
machinery was just worn out.  I'm
hoping for a similar result with the
new paper, but we shall see. Paper
quality does affect the ease/results
of art work quite a bit!

Index Card a Day 2020

The Index-Card-a-Day Challenge is for
developing a creative habit, making art on an
Index Card every day, for 61 days...
(ICAD-June through July).
One of my art buddies said we all need a
name tag like the one above.  Fair warning, I
guess, to folks who don't know about or understand
how all-encompassing our art habit can be!

(No offense intended toward anyone actually dealing with
a serious addiction, please take this in the light-hearted
manner in which it's intended)

You can jump in any time for the ICAD challenge,
 no need to "catch up."
Visit the DaisyYellow blog to find out more.
I'm sharing a few of my cards so far...
The first week I went with a very loose
interpretation of the theme: typography, symbols,
found text and lists.  There are prompts each day
for those who would like to use them,
but they're not required.

I used watercolor backgrounds and collage.  On an
index card, you have to be careful not to get too
much water involved.  I painted up several to start, and
after they dried, I put them under a stack of books
to flatten them out again.  Many art journalers
prep their pages by painting background first, so
this is a similar idea.  Special thanks to
Maia, an Instagram penpal who
sent some of the ephemera I used in collages.

Found text from a book, above. You'd be surprised what
interesting combinations can result from cutting
phrases from an old book.  Most of my collages
include line drawings and details added with
a felt tip pen as the last step.

Above, cards 8-11.  The second week theme
suggested was: mark-making and organic
shapes.  Can you tell which card was inspired
by my spoon jade plant?  Cards 7-10 are
collaged. Card 11 didn't seem (to me) to need
any collage...I managed to stop before I
went 'too far.' if that makes any sense.

I was delighted to receive some gorgeous
mail art recently from Kate Y.  She even
decorated the envelope with a mermaid's
tail! Just look at all the scrumptious layers
and sparkly goodness! The postcard features
dangling golden tags which can be
tucked into areas of the collage. I love it!
I sent a swap/return postcard to Kate decorated
in Egyptian themed designs, 'cause I heard
she enjoyed them. Hope it arrives safely.

Throwing this in just for fun, 'cause it makes me
SMILE!
and...
in order to participate in Elizabeth's T Party,
I need to show something drink related.

So here's a hamster in a tea cup!

T is for Tiger and Toucan

For the month of August I'm doing the
Hobonichi Challenge art prompts:
"It's a Zoo Out There!"
What fun to draw animals, some that
I have never seen. Thank you Internet
for reference photos for art!

I think I may have used this same photo
before to draw a sea otter.  I think he's so
adorable floating on his back, looking so
relaxed!

Sun Bear and Red Panda. Cute little
face on the red panda...

Yes, I work in more than one planner...
and multiple sketchbooks too. After all,
it's not hoarding if it's sketchbooks! ha ha
The top planner (red) is the Hobonichi A6,
in which these little watercolors are
created.

Had to add a fun photo of one of my daughter's
flower beds.  It's beside their basement steps,
hence the reason for the fence. I said her flowers
looked so much better than mine! She admitted
she's been putting on fertilizer every week.
Maybe I need to take a page from her book!

The summer has flown by so quickly! Just
thought I should add some pretty blooms
to the blog before they're gone.

Linking up with Bleubeard and Elizabeth
for T Tuesday. Stop by for a beverage and
a chat. Can you find the coffee cups that
I doodle on my pages nearly every day?
Gotta have coffee before I do all the things.

Call it Therapy

Here's a shameless plug inviting
you to stop by my other
to see the pages of my Fake Journal
so far this month...

The Fake Journal is when I pretend
to be someone else, or try to put
myself in their shoes.  The premise
is that if it's 'fake,' it tends to remove
some of the preconceived notions and
value judgments of what your journal
'should be'.  It's an opportunity to look at
things from a new perspective.
Hopefully, it quiets that mental critical
voice that tells us "that's not good enough."
  Because after all,
it's Fake!

My Hobonichi journaling suffers a bit
when I'm working on my Fake Journal.
The drawings for the April project
seem to take up my drawing energy,
so the Hobonichi has a few more
stickers and quotes mixed in with
 a very few sketches.

I hope you will stop by
Bleubeard and Elizabeth's blog
over at Altered Book Lover, not
only for T Tuesday, but also to see
the annual celebration leading up
to Earth Day.  There are lots of
experiments and tutorials to see,
and beverages to enjoy
on Tuesdays.

for your
protection."

Beach Adventures

When we left for our Florida vacation
on the last day of January, our driveway
looked like this, and it was four below zero.

When we arrived in Panama City Beach, it
was about 65 degrees, and the sun was shining.

Your really get spoiled when it's
almost 70 degrees...

The time goes by all too quickly!
But alas, we had to return home to
cold and gray Ohio.

When hubby picked up our mail at the Post Office,
I was thrilled to discover a wonderful envelope
from dear Elizabeth!  Just look
at that fabric, scrumptious handmade papers,
and lovely tip-in pages!  So sweet
of you.  Thanks so much
dear friend!

Happy Mardi Gras to those who are
celebrating... is it Spring yet?  In shock here
since it's currently 18 degrees and snowing.
I got spoiled by the warm Florida
weather.

Linking up for T Tuesday over at
Bleubeard and Elizabeth's, where we share
a beverage and a chat. Have you noticed I
pretty much automatically draw my coffee
cup every morning in my Hobonichi?

Harry Potter Christmas Feast

As requested, I'm sharing some photos from our family's
Harry Potter Christmas Feast on Christmas Eve, 2018.
Lots of photos, so be prepared. Grab a warm
beverage and enjoy!

Our granddaughter had a list of things to help get
ready, and she did a few things each day
 preceding Christmas Eve. She pasted
the emblems on the house banners, colored the
labels for the Potions, mixed the potions,
(had a grand time mixing water and food coloring!)
and helped cut and glue wings to the flying keys.
On Christmas Eve, she was the one
to set the table and decorate each place. Pretty
impressive for a 9 year-old, I think!

Each person got a golden snitch, made from a
foil-wrapped Ferrero Rocher chocolate, with gold
wings (cut from a gold plastic poinsettia) hot-glued
onto the foil to create the 'wings.'

The jars of Honeydukes sweets were placed down
the center of the table, and Christmas crackers were
placed on each plate. We had a fun time popping
them, and everyone was pretty cooperative
about wearing their tissue-paper crown and
reading their jokes! Our granddaughter even made
Place Cards for each person, with their name
and a little Harry Potter drawing on each. There
was a lightning bolt (scar) flying broom, snitch,
and a 9 3/4 sign, to name a few.

I just picked likely-looking candy to place in each
Honeydukes candy jar. The 'Cockroach Clusters'
 were peanut-butter chocolate Munchies,
and the 'Nougats' were Cookies and Cream
Munchies.  The acid pops are Caramel Apple suckers,
and of course the Licorice Wands were red licorice
sticks. My daughter also made chocolate covered
pretzel 'wands,' but I didn't get a photo of her chocolate
and sprinkled goodies...they disappeared pretty
quickly!

The 'Every Flavored Beans' were just gourmet
jelly beans -- no vomit or earwax flavored beans
in this jar!  Gummy worms were 'Flobber Worms'
and plain old Salt Water Taffy.  My mom was
delighted to discover the pink taffy was
cinnamon flavored!  Coons Candy is where I
purchased the taffy and Zots. (I buy sugar-free
chocolates for my Mom from this delightful family-run
candy makers every year) Zots is a candy that
fizzes in the mouth, so that's why I chose it for
the 'Fizzing Whizbees'.  No levitation occurred,
however!  I refrained from buying the actual
Ants in a sucker, or the crunchy
crickets that Coons Candy sold!

One nice thing for the feast
was being able to re-use many of the
various-shaped glass jars and bottles that
we had used as decor at our daughter's wedding!

The potions lined up on the kitchen counter, in
front of the row of candles. I had a lot of tapers in
holders, but forgot to light them before dinner!
The mad rush to get everything ready, you know.

The granddaughter colored these labels, and chose
what to put in each bottle. She had fun choosing
the colors for the contents.

She used scraps of silk flower leaves in the jar of
Gillyweed, and the Mermaid tears had black glitter
in the colored liquid. (black glitter being the only
color I had, leftover from Halloween!)

Golden Snitches are the magical flying balls that are
the object of the game Quidditch. Young wizards fly
around the Quidditch pitch trying to catch the Snitch
to win the game. There's more to it than that, but
I'll spare you the complicated details!

We had fairly normal food for our feast which included
roast beef, turkey breast, mashed potatoes, gravy,
green beans, a relish tray, and sausage, cheese,
and crackers. Pecan pie is the granddaughter's
favorite, so it definitely had to be on the menu,
along with Treacle Tart.

In the Harry Potter books, Treacle Tart was said to
be Harry's favorite dessert. This is my second try, and
I must say I am rubbish at the topping! I couldn't
manage the lattice crust, so I tried to do Harry's
round glasses frames and the lightening bolt.
There's a star thrown on there too, and even though
it looks very messy, it tasted very good. I was careful
not to overwork the crust this time, and it was more
tender. We don't have Golden Syrup where I live,
and instead of ordering it online (which is a bit
pricey) I used Karo syrup, a tablespoon of molasses,
and a couple of tablespoons of brown sugar in the
lemony filling. Tasted quite good if I do say so
myself.  Just gotta work on that topping, or
leave it off completely!

The Hogwarts Wizarding School
House Banners: Hufflepuff, Gryffindor,
Slytherin and Ravenclaw. Just drawn
and cut from cardstock. I used images from
the internet to draw from. The Grandkids decided
to hang them from the curtains. Please
excuse my dust!

Flying keys were hung from the
kitchen/living room pass-through.
Flying keys were one of the challenges that had
to be solved in order to reach The Sorcerer's Stone,
in the first Harry Potter book.

View from the kitchen, candles lit, Potions behind
the array of food. This only shows the desserts,
cheese and relish tray. I didn't get a shot of the
main courses, (buffet style on top
of the stove) as we wanted to eat it while it
was still warm! I don't know how my mom
has successfully done all those family dinners
for 30 plus years, and get everything done at the
right time! My son helped a lot with the cooking,
so that was key to getting it all done. Oh, and
we had the stuff to make Butterbeer (Creme
soda and ice cream floats) but everyone
was too full!  The grandson did enjoy the
Pumpkin Juice. (actually apple juice, orange
juice, a few tablespoons of pumpkin, and
pumpkin pie spice)

Linking up with Elizabeth's T Tuesday blog post,
and hoping my Potions will 'count' as a
beverage reference. In case you want to be able
to breathe under water, you can have some
Gillyweed!

Happy New Year 2019!
