Turkey Tuesday

It is again time to prepare for a
new year of journaling.
My 2024 Hobonichi has arrived!

It is always a surprise how
small my A6 Hobonichi English Planner
starts out in the new year...
no wrinkled pages from
watercolor and pen, no
added thickness from tipped-in
pages or collages. You'd think
I would be used to it by now,
after eight years using this Planner!

Pictured above, just a month and
a half left to go in the 2023 journal.
The 2024 journal, beneath it, has
"new" Tomoe River paper in it.
From what I can piece together from
on-line articles, a new company has
taken over the TR paper, using
new machinery, and a slightly different
method/recipe. Apparently the old
machinery was just worn out.  I'm
hoping for a similar result with the
new paper, but we shall see. Paper
quality does affect the ease/results
of art work quite a bit!

my posts will come up.  (Tech challenged

Also checking in with some old friends today
for T Tuesday,

featuring my mocha coffee in
the photo above. I love this Debbie Mumm
 snowman cup...I use it year-round!
It's a rainy Tuesday here in Ohio today, so
a warm beverage is a plus.

Wishing everyone who celebrates
Thanksgiving this week, a warm
and wonderful day with family
and friends!

Index Cards and Candy Art

Continuing the 61 day creative
habit challenge - ICAD.
 Index-Card-a-Day art: watercolor or
acrylic backgrounds, collage with painted papers,
a little 'clip art', ink drawings, text, a map piece.
There might be some watercolor pencil in there too...
you get the idea, lots of scraps and itty-bits!
Mixed media on index cards.

This was my favorite of the group...the
combination of colors, and the suggestion
of blue waves...

This month the Hobonichi challenge is candy
and snacks from around the world. It's been
a fun challenge learning about each one,
and trying to represent their packaging. The
Japanese Umaibo was quite unique. Each
flavor of the snack had a different design.

I've noticed the prominent use of bright primary
colors, especially red.  Eye catching is the name
of the game! (Click on any image to enlarge.)

I read an American's review of the Milk Tablets
from Thailand.  Apparently not a taste that he
found great. But I love that happy cow design!

And of course, most Americans are familiar
with Sixlets.  Similar to M &Ms, but smaller.
I like the letterstyle that's a little wonky.
This close-up reveals the imperfections,
(a little too much!) of drawing in a tiny journal.
I find that I can't see to draw tiny and accurately
that well any more. sigh. Suggestion of a
thing will have to do...

My journal pages usually have a
morning coffee doodle, so that 'qualifies' to
join Elizabeth for T Tuesday.
There are usually some delicious looking
photos of appetizing food on the participants blogs.
Did you spot my doodle of the sweet roll?
Stop by for a cup of something and a chat.

Mad Tea Party 2020

Revisiting a drawing from 2018,
Johnny Depp's portrayal of the
Mad Hatter...

I've always wanted to have a Mad Tea Party!
With mismatched cups, tea, cakes and cookies.
And maybe some art projects too.

My drawing after Sir John Tenniel's
original illustration of the Mad Hatter.

Perhaps we should just not invite the
Queen of Hearts. She seems a bit
temperamental...

Hopefully we can avoid any swimming
incidents,

and the wild  mushrooms will be tasty,
but not hallucinogenic in any way.

We can finish off with some tarts!
Would you like strawberry or cherry?

And of course, there must be tea!

Pandemic Pages and Projects

The Hobonichi Challenge for April is
an Alice in Wonderland theme. Above,
white roses painted red, and the White Rabbit.

Some mail art postcards

and a bunny for Easter on an envelope.

A very three dimensional Easter card, hand
delivered to the In-Laws.  Haven't been to visit
my own parents yet as they are isolating.  Hoping
the weather will warm up soon so we can go
over and sit in lawn chairs in the yard to
visit with them!

There are so many cute memes on the
internet, and I just have to steal one
sometimes. 'Steal like an artist' as they say.

Sketched daffodils from my yard for a
card to send.

I really adore the original illustrations for Alice
in Wonderland done by Sir John Tenniel.  But
of course Disney's versions are pretty amazing too!

Did you spot the coffee cups that I include on my
pages?  They are my contribution to 'T for Tuesday'
over at Altered Book Lover's blog. It's always
nice to share tea, coffee, and some conversation
with good friends!

Above, a few text pages that I've watercolored and
drawn on.  I will probably tear them up and
use for collage.  What creative projects
have you been working on?

Creating Randomly

Do you consider baking a form of art?
I've decided that trying to mix purple from
red and blue food coloring is futile.  Turned
out ugly in my opinion, but the best I could do.
On my second try of mixing up this King Cake,
it turned out pretty well, and the family seemed
to enjoy it!

Here are a few random creations that I've
been making during my long absence from
the blog...  Happy Year of the Rat!

Unicorn photo props for my daughter the Music
Teacher. They do a Daddy/Daughter dance as a
fundraiser for the Drama Club, and this year the
theme was Unicorns. The "I Poop Rainbows"
was my favorite... Oh my glittering
rainbow-unicorn-cupcake-stars!

Just a joyful celebration of seeing the rare
experience of sunshine during a gray
 Ohio winter.

Yes, I'm still doodling tiny things and cutting
them out for my Planner/Art Journal.

The Hobonichi Challenge in my 4 x 6 inch Techo
for the month of February is
Love for Australia.  I did not know that the
Pavlova dessert had been invented in Australia!

images are the red coffee mug and the Pavlova

combination to me!

Art Journal Days

Sometimes it's a challenge to sit down and
create a blog post, because of being
busy or because of time away...
but wow....a whole month away!?
Time to catch up.

So it's a photo-heavy post today in order
to catch up with all our 'doins'.

Had a nice visit to the Ohio State Fair,
where I sketched at the same time as
other members of Urban Sketchers Columbus.
I didn't really get a chance to spend any
time with the group, but managed to
touch base with them before everyone
headed home.

It was a really hot day, but I enjoyed
drawing in the barns, hearing the Ohio
State Fair choir and band, and having an
ear of corn on the cob!

What do you do when you have half a page
filled, and then leave the fair?  You've got
half a page to fill when you get to the
next fair!  Below, I was surprised to see
that Fulton County, Ohio had procured a
piece of The Towers for a 911 Memorial.
It also happened to be a day when the
American flag was at half mast to honor the
passing of John McCain.  The flag pole
made an effective 'divider' from one
fair to the next.

Oh, did I mention the Tractor Pull on Friday
 night? Hubby loves those events!
Daughter and I left him on his own
after a couple of hours...just a little more noise
and fumes than we could handle.

Daughter plays the djembe' with her church
praise band, and they played on Saturday
night.  She sang lead on 4 songs...very
proud of her!

Fulton County Fair, near Wauseon, Ohio.
I seem to have an attraction to bunnies.

We also happened upon the end of a Llama and
Alpaca show.  They had been leading them
through an obstacle course.  Very interesting,
and the animals seemed quite agreeable to
jump low obstacles and even walk through
the flaps of a tent!  "Vanilla Ice" (on the right,
above) was a llama that was a creamy beige color
with long curly hair. He had one white eye and
one black eye.  His eyes had black all around
them like he was wearing eye shadow!  I think
maybe his 'nose' should have been longer in my
drawing, but he did insist on moving around a lot.

Daughter and Son in Law are 4-H advisors, and
there is always a big push before the fair each
year to plan and create the Fair Booth. The 4-H
members set up a booth in the Junior Fair Building
to showcase their projects and activities
for the year. As I was a 4-H member as a kid,
and so were my children, it brings back lots of
good memories.

The trials of livestock and animal ownership...
something got into the chicken coop at the In Laws
farm and killed a bunch of chickens.  We suspected a
weasel or a mink.  Eight (or was it 6?) dead
chickens with broken necks, but left uneaten.
Apparently, whatever it was just killed for the fun of it.
Ugh. So bury the chickens and try to secure
the coop- which for a weasel means no
openings bigger than 3/8 inch! SIL was
pretty aggravated. Took them all day to apply
additional screen over the chicken wire.

Labor Day spent with family...

I'm back to doing the Hobonichi Challenge
this month, which is a theme of
"Experiment, Fail, Repeat,"  featuring
technology and inventions.  A good way to
reflect on science that has changed our
lives.  My grandparents lived in the era that
saw the invention of cars and airplane travel.
We are living in the Digital Age, and social
media is very impactful to our lives...
kind of scary to me to realize there is a generation
of kids that would not know how to use a
rotary phone or manual typewriter.
I'm showing my age!

How many tea bags did you notice?
In addition to my coffee, I've been enjoying
some Vanilla Chai Tea in the mornings. So
I'm linking up for the T Tuesday blog hop
over at Bleubeard and Elizabeth's. It's
been a while, but it's always fun to have a
beverage and see what the blogging friends
are up to. Join us!

*There were six tea bags*
