T is for Traveler's Notebook

A few more pages in my
Traveler's Notebook of quotes.
Where would you rate
your 'level' of weirdness?

Wise words of Jack London...
and quote from a fictional character in
the show "Eureka."  Loved that show.
It struck a chord regarding the things
our government spends money on...
maybe with good reason, but
maybe not.

Creativity Is...

"Creativity is Risk-Taking" ~  Sting

Many things can prompt a page
in your Art Journal.  If I see an interesting
image or hear a snatch of phrase that
gets my attention, I grab a bit of
paper and write it down. The 'notes to
self' get slipped between the pages of
my art journal until I decide how to
use them in my art.

In this case, I was listening
 to a National Public Radio
broadcast about creativity. I hadn't
really thought about what creativity
actually IS, but these quotes
rang true for me.

To roughly paraphrase
Elizabeth Gilbert, author:
We've often heard the phrase,
"follow your passion," but that puts
a pretty strong sense of intensity
(and perhaps stress) on the individual.
Curiosity is much more doable.
It gives us 'permission' to work our
day job and follow our curiosity where
it leads us without the pressure
of having to become
a tragic figure or 'starving artist.'

Another place I've found art journal
fodder is on blogs.  Julie Fei-Fan Balzer
does pod casts with her mom and
a guest artist. They are full of gems of
wisdom and laughter.
"Creativity is about exploring possibilities"
is a remark from Julie.  When I listen
to a pod cast, I take notes!
It's fun and informative, plus I can doodle!
Where have you found inspiration lately?

Medieval 'Girls Night Out'

Art journal pages that are not
holiday themed have been happening
'behind the scenes'...

Above,  top portion of the page
is an illustration from a book about
Medieval times...it just looks to me like
"girls night out."  I don't remember what it
really portrays...but they have interesting
'attitude!'

Artist quotes make me happy...

Art Journal Angel

Medieval angel inspired by a tiny photo
in an old book, of an illuminated parchment.
Felt pen, watercolor and white gel pen.
My art work is done over reproduction images
of vintage perfume labels, thus the words
peeking through the watercolor...

Above, journal page using a color copy of
a face that I drew myself.  The large flower
on her head is a sticker intended for scrapbooking. I
outlined the shapes within the flower in pen to
make the page cohesive with my additional
drawings, using felt pen and watercolor.

Scrapbook paper collage, above.

Pen and watercolor...how do
you find the time for everything
you want to do?

Thanks for stopping by...
I'd love to hear about
the art that you create
 on your journal pages...

Sewing Box and other Tuesday Necessities

We just returned from Tennessee
for a visit with our son and his family.
It was so nice to see them all!
Art Journal page, above, about
the road trip home. (click for a larger view)
Lots of fall color...

My son has worked for Southern Star Wood Display Cases, which
creates custom display boxes.  Above, is a gorgeous hardwood
sewing box designed for stitchers to keep all their necessities.

The lid shown is glass, but can be ordered with wood
instead.  That lid would be the ideal place to mount one
of those cross stitch samplers that I love so much!
The lining fabric can be ordered in a number of colors.
The rectangle on the right is a pincushion with a
hardwood base.  Again...I can see it covered with a
sampler that matches the lid!

The tray holds spools or embroidery floss bobbins...
You can go to Southern Star Wood Display Cases on Facebook
to find out more about ordering a custom
sewing box, or any other display box.  Many of their customers
use them to display firearms, knives,  relics, and other collectibles.

Of course, I keep visualizing the box filled with patterns,
thread, scissors, needle keep and a pincushion!

One of our area radio stations has begun their annual
playing of Christmas music-- I am not ready!
...but it IS a good time to start Christmas shopping...

Linking up with Bluebeard and Elizabeth
at Altered Book Lover for T Tuesday, with my virtual mug...
inspired by my snowman mug.  What journaling
should I add to the page?

Someone asked where I get my quotes.
I just type into my browser
"quotes about ________."
Fill in the blank with whatever topic you'd like,
and then choose your favorites...

Be sure to visit Elizabeth, and also
Southern Star Wood Display Cases!
Happy Fall!

Watercolor Art Journal Pages

Watercolor, calligraphy, quotes
and collage in a new art journal.
The pages measure 8 1/2" x 11."
It is larger than many of the
journals I've worked in recently.

The larger size does present
different challenges.  Obviously
there is more space to fill, but I
try to leave a border around
the edge so the finished page
will fit onto my scanner.

A sketch of parts of one of our
cottonwood trees.  The bark is quite
deeply lined with furrows, and has
a bit of light green moss.  The leaves
that I sketched had been damaged
by insects.  The branch silhouettes
are always interesting against the sky.

Iron weed adds a lot of color
to the roadsides...

A spread in the Bits and Pieces journal.
It's now full.  The small size of the pages,
5" x 8", made it seem easier to complete.

The last page, with watercolor leaves,
a tiny collage, and fabric.

What have you finished lately?

Words and Doodles ~ ICAD 2013

Above is a quote from a Public Radio interview
of a 'creative life coach.'  Sorry to say I didn't get
his name written down, but he was saying that
asking the right question can make us view things
in a whole new light, and energize us into action.

As someone who has to be ever vigilant about
maintaining my weight, I ask myself this question
every day!

A quote from the book 'Good Mail Day.'
It's a fun, inspiring, and motivational book
about mail art. I think this is a good way to
get over the 'blank paper' fear:  Don't think,
just make!

Quote from Randy Plowman's book
'The Collage Workbook,' another
excellent book about making collage,
with well-written guidelines and
fun ideas to try.

As our Independence Day approached here in
the U.S. I thought it would be a good time to
look up some quotes by our first president,
George Washington.

I've been having a lot of fun with my Sharpie pen
and watercolors, but I haven't painted with acrylics
in ages.   I am feeling the desire to get messy with
paint and incorporate that on some of my cards...
so check back for the next installment.

Post Script: Here are all of my ICADS
since the beginning of the challenge!

Visit Daisy Yellow , and also the ICAD Flickr group
to see more art on index cards.

I have been having some computer difficulties
this week, with numerous crashes.  Cross your
fingers that I'll figure it out and get things
cleaned up and running smoothly again!

Have a creative week!

Painting Over Text

Permanent marker and watercolor
over book text...the rose above
was drawn while looking at
a vintage wallpaper pattern.

Just tear a page from an old book and
draw on it with a bullet tip permanent marker.
Then paint watercolor washes over the pen drawing.
I use my hair dryer between washes to dry it
more quickly. Add details with a fine tip marker
and white gel pen.

I've enlarged motifs from some of my
previous art journal pages, but the
possibilities are endless!

where there is an art auction going on
to benefit Sandy Hook Elementary.

Collage and Quotes

I realized that my desire to
fill my journal with complex
two-page spreads was
leaving my art journal a bit empty.

So I've been working backwards
in the journal and doing quick collages
and quotes on the back side
of some of the pages.

You may remember the monsters
from the Index Card a Day challenge...
I thought of them when I wrote down
this quote and glued the card
into my art journal.

A piece of art made years ago
when I was trying out
rubber stamping as a medium.
There are lots of drawings
and doodles too...
This was torn from a drawing pad/sketchbook
and collaged into my journal.
